Zirconia Ceramics Properties and Uses

This is what zirconia porcelain looks like.

Zirconia ZrO2 can be described as the crystalline oxide in zirconium. Its color ranges from white to black and occurs most often in monoclinic structures. Zirconia, one of its most important materials, is very popular.

Zirconia (a form of ceramic material) is used for several purposes.

This structure of zirconia contains metal atoms and raises the question about whether it is ceramic. This allows zirconia combine the high strength of metals and the biocompatibility that ceramics offer.

Most common zirconia grades

Yttria sanitized zirconia (Y–PSZ)

Youtria partially stabilized zirconia, or Y-PSZ (Yttria partial stabilized Zirconia) can be doped with the yttriumoxide(Y2O3) stabilizer. This stabilizer will enhance the inner grain structure of the material and transform it from monoclinic towards tetragonal. It is a form of fine grain material which has the highest possible bending force of all ceramics. It's very resistant to impact and wear as well as having low thermal conductivity. These characteristics make it a good substitute for most metals. The materials toughness is due to the addition of ytrium oxide (Yttria). A material that is under stress will have a crystal structure change from monoclinic or tetragonal, leading to an increase in its highly localized volumes of about 3-5%. By increasing the volume, cracks shrink, reducing their potential to grow or propagate. This property is responsible for the high flexibility and low sensitivity of the material to stress fatigue.

Magnesium or partially stabilised zirconia.

Zirconia that has been doped with magnesium dioxide (MgO), may also cause compression in the internal matrix. However this structure can be described as cubic. M-PSZ does not experience phase migration, so it has better resistance to heat and humidity. M-PSZ maintains its strength, even under high temperature and humidity conditions.

Zirconia-ceramics Processing

Zirconia can be transformed into complex geometric shapes easily using its raw blanks. The material's main body shrinks by approximately 20% because of the required sintering procedure to make it fully dense. These shrinkages make it impossible for pre-sintering to be within very precise tolerances.

When processing/grinding completely sintered materials, the use of diamond tools is essential to meet very tight tolerances. The diamond coated grinding wheel / tool is used to cut the material into desired shapes. It can be time-consuming, expensive and difficult due to the hardness and inherent toughness of this material.
