Concept of HPMC

Hypromellose is a solid, slightly off-white to beige powder in appearance, and can be made into granules. This compound forms colloids when dissolved in water. This non-toxic component is flammable and can react violently with oxidizing agents.

Hypromellose in aqueous solution, like methylcellulose, has thermal gelation properties. That is, when the solution is heated to a critical temperature, the solution condenses into a nonflowable but semiflexible substance. In general, this critical (freezing) temperature is inversely proportional to the solution concentration of HPMC and the concentration of methoxy groups in the HPMC molecule (which in turn depends on the degree of substitution and the molar substitution of the methoxy groups). That is, the higher the concentration of methoxyl groups, the lower the critical temperature. What is HPMC used for?

Thus, increased hypromellose would result in a longer lubricant presence on the cornea, which would theoretically lead to less eye irritation, especially in dry climates, home or work environments. At the molecular level, this polymer contains beta-linked D-glucose units that keep metabolism intact for days to weeks. In terms of manufacturing, since hypromellose is a vegetarian alternative to gelatin, production costs are slightly higher due to the semi-synthetic manufacturing process. In addition to its wide commercial and retail availability, over the counter in various products, hypromellose 2% solution has been documented to help protect the cornea during surgery and orbital surgery.
