Applications of Tungsten disulfide

Nature of Tungsten disulfide

Tungsten disulfide is a compound of tungsten and sulfur, with the chemical formula WS2 and a molecular weight of 247.97. It is a black-gray powder and occurs in nature as wolframite, a dark gray rhombic crystalline solid. The relative density is 7.510.

Slightly soluble in cold water and soluble in hot water [2]. Insoluble in hydrochloric acid and alkali (except for mixtures of concentrated nitric acid and hydrofluoric acid). Soluble in molten alkali, insoluble in alcohol. Density 7.6g · cm-3. It has reducibility and can react with potent oxidizing agents such as hot concentrated sulfuric acid, nitric acid, and aqua regia. It can be converted into WO3 when heated in air or oxygen. [1] Heating to 1250 ℃ in a vacuum decomposes into tungsten and sulfur. In a dry pure nitrogen gas stream, the tungsten trisulfide and sulfur mixture is co-heated to 900 ℃ to sublimate the excess sulfur, resulting in the tungsten disulfide residue.

Advantages of Tungsten disulfide

1. It has a very low coefficient of friction (0.03), high extreme pressure resistance, and oxidation resistance (it starts to decompose at 450°C in air, completely decomposes at 650°C, and starts to decompose at 1100°C in a vacuum, and completely decomposes at 2000°C). It is suitable for lubrication under harsh conditions such as high temperature, high pressure, high vacuum, high load, high speed, high radiation, strong corrosion, and ultra-low temperature.

2. It has good adsorption capacity on the metal surface. It can be added to engineering plastics to make lubricating components or evenly mixed with some volatile solvents, then sprayed on the metal surface to improve the die's life and the workpiece's surface finish in punching and forging.

3. Tungsten disulfide powder can be mixed with oil and fat to form tungsten disulfide oil, tungsten disulfide ointment, tungsten disulfide wax, and other solid lubricating blocks and lubricating films.

Application of Tungsten disulfide

It can be used as a lubricant with better performance than molybdenum disulfide, a lower coefficient of friction, and higher compressive strength and used solely for high temperature, high pressure, high speed, high load, and equipment operating in chemically active media. The forging and stamping lubricant configured with other materials can prolong the die's life and improve the product's smoothness. Filling materials such as PTFE and nylon can be used to make self-lubricating parts. [2]

In addition, tungsten disulfide can also be used as a catalyst in the petrochemical field. Its advantages are high cracking performance, stable and reliable catalytic activity, and long service life.

Price of Tungsten disulfide

Particle size and purity will affect the product's price, and the purchase volume can also affect the cost of particle size. A large amount of large amount will be lower. The price of particle size can be found on our company's official website.
